There were plenty of accolades handed out as Morton’s successful boys soccer campaign wrapped up recently.
The Potters’ official 2012 record under first-year head coach Derrek Drenckpohl was 13-8-4.
Morton was a Class 2A sectional finalist for the fourth time in the last five years and tied Metamora for second place in the Mid-Illini Conference at 5-1-1.
“The way we came together, we did some good things with guys who hadn’t been in that position,” said Drenckpohl. “I think we have some positives to take away from the season.”
One shootout loss to Moline (in Illinois) was recorded as a tie, while the other shootout defeat to St. Peters Ft. Zumwalt South (in Missouri) went down as a loss.
Senior Carson Gray led Morton with 25 goals and was third with five assists.
One year after Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state honors, Gray was named an all-sectional recipient in 2012.
Joining him on that list was Potter senior Ben Willett.
Jonah Greving, a junior, was second with eight goals. He shared the team lead with senior Wade Rossi with six assists.
Jonathan Stuckey, a senior, had six goals and three assists, while classmate Drew Hodges scored three times with four helpers.
Another senior, Eric Fuehring, added three tallies for Morton.
Gray, Willett and Jordan Repholz all were Peoria Area High School Soccer Coaches Association senior all-star selections.
The 4-KICKS/Sport Verein Senior Boys All-Star game took place Monday at Notre Dame.
A 1-1 tie left the Mid-Illini with a 5-4-5 series edge over the Mid-State 6 & Independents in the current format.
Five Morton players were named to either first- or second-team all-Mid-Illini Conference positions.
The entire list of Potter fall all-league honorees will appear in a November edition of the Morton Times-News and on www.mortontimesnews.com/sports.
