  • Several local businesses are ready to take part in Small Business Saturday in Morton this weekend.

While this is the third year for the day nationwide, this will be the second time Morton has participated in it.

“I have 18 retailers that are offering some kind of special on that day,” Morton Chamber of Commerce Program Director Tammy Stephens said. “I think last year it was pretty successful just here locally.”

The event, a day after Black Friday, was created to remind communities to support their local businesses as well.

“We want them to shop in Morton,” Stephens said.

To drum up more local shopping, the Chamber of Commerce will also be giving away an iPad 2 during the day as well. Entries will be given to anyone that makes a paid purchase on Saturday at one of the 18 stores.

The drawing for the iPad 2 will take place on Monday.

Another new feature the chamber is doing this year to help promote Small Business Saturday is to make a coupon sheet with coupons for each business good only that day.

The flier was mailed out to all the residents in the city. Extra coupons will be available at the chamber.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of every community,” Heartland Partnership project coordinator Renee Charles said. “In fact, more than 95 percent of all businesses in our region are considered small business. Those small businesses employ over half of all private sector workers and they are the economic drivers for us.”

According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, 46 percent of local merchants plan to participate in Small Business Saturday nationwide, with 67 percent of those offering discounts.

Stephens said that Morton residents already support small businesses, and she hopes Saturday will just be a helpful reminder to continue to shop locally.

She added that she plans to see how well businesses do on Small Business Saturday this year.
