Steven C. Sommer, 61, of Morton, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
He was born Feb. 15, 1951, in Pekin, to Theodore and Josephine (Conrad) Sommer.
Surviving are his parents of Pekin; one son, Joel (Heather) Sommer of Carmel, Ind.; one daughter, April (Paul) Nicol of Frankfort, Ill.; three grandchildren, Ashton and Tate Sommer and Savannah Nicol; one brother, Jim (Susan) Sommer of Tremont; two sisters, Barb (Jim) Wieferich of Marietta, Ohio and Judy (Dan) Thiessen of Austin, Texas.
He was a 1973 graduate of Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio, where he played football. He was an All-Conference Defensive End for the 1971 and 1972 seasons. Steve will be posthumously inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame with his 1972 football team in Jan. 2013.
Sommer Center for Health and Fitness Education at the university was dedicated in October in honor of the family.
He was an owner with his father and brother in the family business, Sommer Brothers Seed Co., in Pekin until his retirement in 2006.
During his retirement, he enjoyed being active in running, cycling and hiking including climbing mountains in Colorado.
He was an active member of Grace Church in Morton, where he participated in missions trips and other work trips.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Grace Church in Morton with the Rev. Doug Habegger officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Further visitation was from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Hirstein Cemetery in Morton.
