Donald H. Davis Sr., 93, of Tremont, formerly of Hopedale, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Hopedale Nursing Home.
Born July 16, 1919, in Metamora to Rev. J. W. and Laura L. Schlabach Davis, he married Violet Mae Bachman on June 22, 1939, in Low Point. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Shirley (Joseph) Springer, Debbie (Don) Beard; one son, Don Jr. (Barbara) Davis, all of Tremont; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marilyn Johnson of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Everett Wayne, and an infant brother and sister.
He grew up in Flanagan and graduated from Metamora High School. He attended Goshen College and then worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. until he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a medic in the European Theater during WWII.
Upon his discharge from service he graduated from Worsham School of Mortuary Science in 1946. He began his career in funeral service serving his apprenticeship at the Preston Funeral Home in Pekin before purchasing the Rickett Funeral in Hopedale in 1947.
In 1950, he founded Davis Mortuary in Tremont. He and his wife owned and operated the two businesses until 1982 when they retired and began spending their winters in the Orlando area.
While in Florida, he worked part time for Yoder & Frey Auctioneers, Disney World and the Houston Astros Training Camp.
He was a member of Hopedale Mennonite Church, where his funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Revs. Kurt Walker and Roger Springer will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Davis Mortuary in Tremont and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Mennonite Cemetery in Hopedale.
