The Morton girls basketball team arrived at 8 a.m. Dec. 15 at The Dream Center in Peoria on a rainy morning.
They were loaded with household items, wrapped Christmas gifts for children and a sizeable monetary donation, all thanks to those who supported their effort.
The girls found volunteer positions throughout the building directing the approximately 300 families who were there to have a family portrait taken, along with enjoying a meal and receiving Christmas gifts for the children.
Each person had the opportunity to have their hair and make-up professionally done before having their portrait taken by about 10 professional photographers from the area.
The program was called "Smile. Eat. Receive."
The team takes pride in its annual community service project and this year was no exception as it helped The Dream Center Peoria, a ministry that impacts thousands of lives throughout the Peoria area.
Everyone was so impressed by what The Dream Center does at Christmas and throughout the year that the team is planning on being involved in a Dream Center spring project.
The organization offers free prom dresses, along with hair and make-up, to area young ladies who do not otherwise have the means to attend a high school prom.
Morton girls basketball head coach Bob Becker has said it is easy to help someone learn to play basketball. The real challenge is helping develop a player into a young person that understands the importance of giving back to the community and helping those in need.
