Herman J. Schmidt, 94, of Morton, died at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
Born Jan. 26, 1919, in Washington to Henry and Wilhemina (Saathof) Schmidt, he married Maxine Schick on Feb. 17, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2005.
He also was preceded in death by one son, Mark; his grandson; and four brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Lynn (John) Harper of Morton; four grandchildren; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Roy (Phyllis) Getz and Ed (Barbara) Roecker, both of Morton, Vince (Wilma) Bermel of Oakton, Va., Richard Fehr of Roanoke, Phyllis Schmidt of Washington; and his stepsister, Ethel Kuntzman of Virden.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving as a tank commander in the 774th Tank Battalion, part of the 78th and 83rd Infantry Division in Germany. He was privileged to take the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2010.
He worked for Hicks Gas for many years, was a DeKalb Seed Corn Dealer and farmed in the Morton area.
He was a member of Morton Apostolic Christian Church and Kennel Lake Sportsman’s Club in Morton.
Services were Feb. 20 at Morton Apostolic Christian Church, with church ministers officiating. Visitation was Feb. 19 at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, and Feb. 20 at the church. Burial was at Morton Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
