Morton High School appears to have a shot at winning its first Mid-Illini Conference All-Sports title since 2001-02.

In Metamora's run of eight straight championships in the competition that equally encompasses all varsity sports, the fall season generally has been the most troublesome for the Potters in relation to the Redbirds.

In the last three years, for instance, Morton has trailed Metamora by an average of 1167 points after the first of three seasons in the school year.

That gap has a chance to narrow considerably in fall 2010.

The Potters seem likely to make big gains on the Redbirds in boys golf and boys cross country compared to '09. Smaller pushes could be made in football and girls cross country. No significant difference is projected in girls tennis and girls golf.

Two key areas to follow are volleyball and boys soccer. Morton outscored Metamora by 100 points (1,300-1,200) last year combining those sports. The Potters would like to muster a similar margin in '10.

Adding to the intrigue is the presence of Washington, coming off its best All-Sports showing since '05-06. The Panthers could be in the mix with a realistic chance for five top-two finishes in the eight fall sports.

The fall season is pivotal since it makes up nearly half of the 17 sports involved in the All-Sports.
