Well, since I re-printed a not-so-flattering review from a few weeks back, I thought I'd take this opportunity to shed some light on the other side of those tracks, and share with you one we received last week, a distinctly more positive take on our latest offering. No, we did not pay this individual for his kind words. In fact, we've never even made his acquaintance, but he seems to have taken a shine to us nonetheless.
Reading commentary on your output, even positive, can be a painful experience, as it frequently brings to your attention comparisons that, while intended as complimentary, are not necessarily the associations you would prefer drawn from your work. For instance, most current "rock" bands wouldn't relish being compared to 70s bands The Bay City Rollers or Angel, and I certainly don't know many vocalists who would embrace having their performance depicted as "strange", but in the context of this critique, and being well aware of and secure in the knowledge that we are; at the very least, rather unlike most current "rock" bands, I'm actually pleased as punch with this critical assessment.

"There's a new sound from Nashville and one that you wouldn't ordinarily associate with that musical mecca. This is the sound of melodic, punky pop rockers fORMER. Refreshingly they don't sound as typically American as say bands like Good Charlotte or Sum 41. Sure there are some Cheap Trick moments on this disc but mix that with some good old British punk and new wave influences and you've got a band that you can't quite pinpoint where they live just by listening to their music.
The album's intro has me thinking of The Ruts but that dissipates upon the entrance of Denny Smith's strange vocals. Strange is good. He has style. His evocative vocals come from the same school as Greg Dulli, Sponge's Vinnie Dombroski and Subcircus' Peter Bradley Jnr. There's something more going on here than singing. Something more evocative. The chorus picks back up into punk territory with shouted gang vocals. Connecting the punk passages are musically inventive pieces that may get you thinking of anyone from The Wildhearts to Jellyfish. A strong opener.
And a strong follow-up too. 'Fix You' cements all of these influences into a hook laden song convincingly put across by Denny's vocal delivery.
The hooks keep a-coming with 'How Does It Feel' - another contender for standout track. The vocal production is brilliant - close and intimate reminding me of Paloalto with a backing sounding as if lifted from Angel's classic 'Sinful' album.
'Lie To Me' conjures up a whole platoon of influences; Aimee Mann, Bay City Rollers, Redd Kross, Mansun, Haven and The Cars. This built-in familiarity has instant classic written all over it.
'Born A Ghost' is a lyrical adjunct to 'The Ghost At Number One' by Jellyfish. A musically interesting and spacious song that resolves into another punky push in the chorus.
And talking of the band being musically interesting just listen to 'Blue Divide' which stretches out into typical Wildhearts meandering. And then there's 'Sisters' with its sleazy intro and inventive middle section which turns as dark as Queen's 'Death On Two Legs' and as funky as The Electric Boys...wow!
'Say It Isn't So' has a funky pop sensibility similar to what Kiss played about with on their much underrated 'Unmasked' album. The overall effect here is much punchier and heavier and augmented with a backdrop of Jellyfish-like harmonies.
fORMER are a cool find this early in 2012. A perfect blend of power pop, punk and rock for your money. The album is very well produced and the songs? There's not a bad one on the album. Had I heard this record last month I'm sure that it would be sitting comfortably in my top 20 albums of the year."

So, take from the above what you will, but it smells like a victory to me, and the truth is, I'd rather have them love it or hate it...the in-betweens are the ones that scare me. I've never set out to be background music...Snow Patrol and the like (God bless 'em) pretty much have that market cornered anyway.
Cheers,
D.
I'm the singer/guitarist and occasional ivory tickler of fORMER (Nashville, TN), and I also play guitar for some gentlemen who call themselves The Beauty School Dropouts. My musical resume includes stints with the now-defunct Bombshell Crush & Loveshine, as well as the occasionally active The Great Affairs & Best Of Seven(Los Angeles, CA), and you can probably find CDs from these bands somewhere on Amazon, eBay, or some random used CD shop in Tupelo, MS, if you were so inclined. I'm a songwriter. I appreciate a tall Jack & Coke when the mood strikes(it seldom does these days, to be honest). I had an old dog…but he died(RIP Maxwell), so we got a new one, a sweet fella that can run faster than anyone on steroids...his name is Pioneer. Pioneer has recently been joined by a vagrant that has adopted us, who goes by the name Cash...she's too sweet to send packing. I own a record shop in Pekin, IL, Co-Op Records. Occasionally I travel north from my home in NashVegas to supervise my henchmen as they do my bidding. I often waste my time driving without a destination just to hear myself think. I love Sun Drop cola....sue me. I can't eat anything with bones in it or anything that retains the general shape of itself in living form....it just grosses me out, though I have recently grown quite fond of Sushi (thanks, Joey). I have great friends and a cool family...in particular my Mom...the best. I don't go to church, but I'd like to believe. I eat too much junk food...my sweet tooth is the stuff of legends, but I have shaken the pastry monkey from my back. I used to love that band Trixter, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I hate cold. I miss California. I love Nashville...most days. I don't sleep much. I hate idle time. I think Elvis Costello's "Man Out Of Time" is quite possibly my favorite song of ALL time....not sure though, and it's looking like The Afghan Whigs' "Crazy" might steal the prize. I'm red/green colorblind if anybody wants to mess with me at a traffic light. I guess that's all for now....more later.
