Although Relay For Life is five months away, planning for the event is already taking place.

Morton Relay For Life manager Vicki Horn said the small committee in charge of putting on the annual American Cancer Society event needs all the help it can get.

Horn said help is needed in every area.

“We need help wherever people want to help,” Horn said.

Some of the areas where help in planning is needed are the Luminaria ceremony, the survivor dinner and ceremony, entertainment and recruitment for new teams.

With the event being held at Jefferson Elementary School for the first time, Horn said she believes the event will be bigger than in years past.

“It’s not hard to help out. We will help along the way to mentor volunteers and make it easy,” she said.

The  planning committee meets once a month on the second Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Red Rock Bar and Grille.

Horn said she is hoping civic groups and high school groups will help set up and clean up the day of the event.

She is working to have the downtown merchants stay open later for event attendees.

“I’m hoping we’ll be more visible since it’s right downtown. Everybody is invited to join us. There will be entertainment all evening, food and games,” Horn said.

The theme this year is “I elect to be cancer free,” to go along with the election year.

“It will be easy for the theme, red, white and blue. Have fun with it,” Horn said. “The day itself is up and down … every emotion is hit all day. It’s an emotional day, but it can be so healing in a way.”

Relay For Life of Morton begins at 3 p.m. June 8 and goes until 8 a.m. June 9 at Jefferson Elementary School.

Horn said she has about 10 teams signed up for the event.

The kick-off event is from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children.

For more information on how to start a team or to help with planning the event, Horn can be contacted at 635-4084.
