Heather Hochstettler, a first-grade teacher at Jefferson School, recently received a grant for $399 from PNC Bank.

Hochstettler will use the grant to purchase materials from Frog Publications — a company that develops educational materials that use a game format to provide daily practice for skills and promote long-term memory of those skills.

This grant will provide reading, language arts and math materials for her first-grade classroom. She is familiar with these products because she uses them when teaching summer school at the third-grade level.

“It’s a nice developmental thing that breaks up the day,” she said.

The students practice and master skills while playing a game. The materials allow for her to select skill levels for each student. For several years Morton District 709 has emphasized differentiated instruction to provide instruction to every student at their level. This grant will allow her to have resources that meet that goal.

“It’s really hitting the entire gamut of kids,” she said about products offered by Frog Publications.

Hochstettler said she will use these games throughout the school day and selected Frog Publications materials because they are learning games that are research based.

“I can reach every kid, every single day,” she said about how she will use these materials.
Hochstettler has been teaching for 19 years, all at Jefferson School in grades kindergarten, first or second. She is also a national board certified teacher.
