Jason Thiry is the new Morton High School head football coach.

The Morton District 709 Board of Education Tuesday night approved the hiring for the 2010 season of Thiry, the Potter defensive coordiantor last year, a press release indicated Wednesday.

Thiry earned a head position at Morton for the second consecutive year. He took over the boys track and field program last spring.

Thiry, who teaches physical education, also is the frosh/soph wrestling coach. The Potter underclass grapplers have won three consecutive Mid-Illini Conference titles.

He initially came to Morton in 2006 and served as the varsity offensive and defensive line coach for 13-year leader Hal Chiodo.

MHS athletic director Greg Prichard said in the release Thiry has an excellent relationship with his student-athletes and staff and the athletic department is excited about the future of the football program under Thiry's direction.

Thiry graduated in 2000 from the University of Dubuque, where he was a collegiate wrestler.

He also had previous coaching stints at St. Bede Academy in Oglesby and Cordova High School in Memphis, Tenn.

There will be a players meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday in the MHS cafeteria. Thiry will meet with the parents of current and prospective players in District 709 at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria.

Thiry takes over for Trevor Lehnen, who was 7-11 in two seasons as the Morton football coach.
