Beginning 6 p.m. May 7, more than 100 Morton elementary and junior high students will take part in “Lay Up a Treasure,” a fundraiser for Haitian Relief.

During the event, students will shoot basketball layups continuously for 24 hours straight. Each basket made will result in funds being raised to benefit Habitat for Humanity and its Haitian Relief effort.

During the next five weeks, students will be busy contacting friends, neighbors, family members and local businesses to sponsor their layups with a financial commitment. Students will then shoot as many layups as they can during their shift and all “made” layups will be counted and tallied by official event support staff. Once the event has concluded, participants will collect all of the sponsor commitments and the MJHS student body will be making a presentation of funds to Greg Woith, the director of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The goal for this event is to raise desperately needed funds and draw attention to the tremendous work that has yet to be done in Haiti. The event aims to inspire others to become involved in an effort to help the many needs around the world and support organizations like Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity has registered and applied for an official record attempt with the Guinness World Records in the category of “The most basketball layups made in a 24-hour period” and are currently waiting to see if the event qualifies under the guidelines.
