Festival marketing gets a boost

Despite record crowds during last year’s Morton Pumpkin Festival, chamber officials are seeking an even larger number of guests — from other communities.

Through billboards, Facebook ads and radio spots, Morton Chamber of Commerce officials hope to garner additional visitors to this year’s Pumpkin Festival.

Police step up traffic enforcement

Now, and continuing through the remainder of Jackson Street resurfacing, Morton police are planning to step up enforcement, particularly near school and construction zones.

Morton gas station owner faces tax evasion charges

Two area gas station owners could face up to five years in prison for allegedly withholding thousands in sales tax from the state of Illinois.

Abdelmomen Abdallah, 33, of Peoria and Dineshbhai Patel, 57, Morton, both face 16 counts of sales tax fraud. A $10,000 arrest warrant was issued for Abdallah last week while Patel was arrested Thursday, just hours after a news conference in Chicago, where Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced the result of the operation.

Hale announces TCRC retirement

Ron Hale, Tazewell County Resource Center president and CEO for the past 14 years, announced his retirement to the agency’s board of directors during a July 19 meeting.

His last day directing the agency will be April 30, 2011.

BridgeWay parties in the park

FOIA compliance hard to find in Tazewell

In the Tazewell County Department of Assessments and Board of Review office, Gary Twist fills the role of Freedom of Information Act officer. It is a role created by the state’s new Freedom of Information Act, which went into effect Jan. 1. Twist, however, is not in compliance with the law.  

When asked, Twist admitted he had not completed the state required training on the new Freedom of Information Act and did not have the materials required to be available in plain sight under the act.

But, Twist was not alone.

Chamber seeks festival window-decorating applications

The Morton Chamber of Commerce will award cash prizes for the best-decorated windows on display during the Morton Pumpkin Festival. The chamber is seeking participants in the following divisions: adults, organizations and K-6 classrooms to participate in the Midwest Hearing Center’s Window Display event held in downtown Morton.
