Morton Chamber announces 2012 Women In Business breakfast series

The Morton Chamber of Commerce announced the 2012 Women In Business breakfast series.

The 90-minute breakfast will be held in the Terrace Room at the Best Western in Morton.  Doors open at 7 a.m. for networking/buffet breakfast, followed by one of the great programs listed below. 

District 709 kindergarten registration March 1

Kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school term will be held from 7-8:30 a.m. and noon-5 p.m. March 1 at Brown, Grundy, Jefferson and Lincoln Elementary Schools for Morton Unit School District 709.

Children who will be 5-years-old on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall. It is necessary that parents present their child’s birth certificate and social security number at the time of registration.

Quinn launches ‘Innovations Project’ to improve health care results

Gov. Pat Quinn and the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services have put out a call for health care providers to collaborate to develop innovative approaches to coordinating care for Illinois’ Medicaid recipients, focusing on improved preventive and follow-up treatments.

Park district accepting registration for indoor soccer spring sessions through Feb. 10

The Morton Park District will be accepting registration for the Spring Session indoor youth and adult soccer leagues until Feb. 10 at the park office located at 349 W. Birchwood.

Office hours are 8:30 am.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Enrollment is limited and registration will continue as long as openings exist.

School board attendee requests posting meetings online

When community members cannot attend Morton District 709 school board meetings, they rely on information that can later be found in local newspapers or District 709’s Communicator. Ken Mallinson, Jefferson Elementary School PTO president and parent, does not think that is enough.

“I noticed the village board is now posting their meetings on YouTube,” Mallinson said. “I’d like to ask that you consider recording your meetings and posting them on YouTube as well.”
Mallinson, who brought his children to the Jan. 24 District 709 meeting where he made the recommendation, said he is not always able to make the meetings.

Schock discusses America’s debt

Morton’s weekly Rotary meeting plays host to many different speakers throughout the year, inviting members to perk interests in attendees.

At the Jan. 25 meeting, U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Peoria, spoke to a filled room of Rotarians and guests about the state of the country.

Schock said the most discussed issue brought to his attention is spending cuts, and what constituents think should be cut.

Board decides fate of dilapidated building

A dilapidated building on a parcel of land purchased in November by the Morton Village Board will be removed so the village won’t have to pay for its demolition.

Board members agreed Monday to give the building to Morton resident Pete Holman at no cost. Under the terms of the agreement, Holman must remove the building by Feb. 1 and clean up the site.
