All-American on track, in classroom
Amelia Glueck is an All-American on the track. Now the Illinois Wesleyan University junior from Tremont is also an All-American in the classroom.
Glueck was named Wednesday to the NCAA Division III Women’s Track and Field Academic All-America team, selected by the College Sports Information Director of America.
The health promotion and wellness management major has a perfect 4.0 grade point average at Illinois Wesleyan.
Glueck was the Division III national outdoor long jump champion in 2016.
She was an indoor and outdoor All-American this season thanks to her fourth-place finish in long jump at the Division III indoor meet and her fifth-place finish in long jump at the Division III outdoor meet.
Her All-American jumps were 18 feet, 11 1/4 inches and 19 feet, respectively.
Glueck won long jump at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin outdoor meet and was second in long jump at the conference’s indoor meet this season, earning All-Midwest Region honors for indoor and outdoor track from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
She chosen the conference’s women’s track and field “Athlete of the Week” three times in 2017 and she set a school record in the outdoor long jump at 19-4 3/4.
One more thing: Glueck placed eighth in long jump at the 2017 Drake Relays competing in a field that included six Division I athletes among the nine finalists.
IWU senior Eric Rydell from St. Joseph-Ogden was named to the Division III Men’s Track and Field Academic All-America Team.
Tucker was a terror
Tremont senior Tucker Runyon was named Thursday to the Journal Star’s 2017 Baseball All-Area Team.
Runyon led the Turks this season in batting average (.531), hits (60), singles (32), triples (8), home runs (6), RBIs (36) and runs scored (57).
He also had 14 doubles and he drew 15 walks.
Runyon won’t be playing baseball in college. He’s headed to Illinois State University to major in agribusiness.
That shouldn’t be a surprise to those who know him. In his All-Area profile, Runyon said he’s a certified beekeeper.
Illini Bluffs senior pitcher-third baseman Taylor Bruninga and Tremont sophomore pitcher Silas Israel made the All-Area honorable mention list.
From East Carolina to Peoria
It was a busy day Thursday for the Peoria Chiefs.
Southpaw pitcher Evan Kruczynski from East Carolina University, who was selected in the ninth round of the amateur draft this month by the St. Louis Cardinals, joined the Chiefs.
Kruczynski is a 6-foot-5, 215-pounder whose hometown is Franklin, Wis.
Lefty pitcher Brady Bowen was promoted from the low Class A Chiefs to high Class A Palm Beach and lefty pitcher Ian Oxnevad was activated to the Chiefs’ roster from the temporary inactive list.
