Thirty-three competitors will tee it up this weekend in the annual Tri-County Match Play men’s amateur golf tournament at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin.

There will be 14 golfers in Championship Flight, seven golfers in A Flight and 12 golfers in Senior Flight. Competition will begin Friday and continue through Sunday.

Only one of the three defending flight champions is the field. Chris Fort has returned to defend his title in Senior Flight and is seeded No. 3 after the qualifying round.

Defending champs Drake Bushong (Championship Flight) and Mike Dralle (A Flight) are not playing.

Bushong is competing this week in the Chicago District Golf Association Amateur Championship in Indiana (see following item).

Tri-County Match Play tournament semifinals and finals in each flight will be Sunday.

The No. 1 seeds are Tim Sheppard in Championship Flight, Josh Ellingson in A Flight and Scott Deakin in Senior Flight. Qualifying round scores and match play pairings will be in the Scoreboard in Friday’s paper.

 

Kuhl, Bushong move on

Pete Kuhl from Morton and Drake Bushong from Pekin made it to match play in the 98th Chicago District Golf Association Amateur Championship at Briar Ridge Country Club.

Kuhl shot 7-under 70-67--137 and finished third in qualifying for match play, which began Wednesday. Bushong shot 75-68--143 and ended up in a tie for 13th place.

The top 16 in qualifying moved on to match play on the 6,829-yard Briar Ridge course in Schereville, Ind., a west Indiana suburb of Chicago.

Kuhl and Bushong are both collegiate golfers. Kuhl is a sophomore at Wisconsin and Bushong is a junior at Bradley.

Time for Tazewell Amateur

Registration is continuing for the annual Tazewell County Amateur men’s golf tournament that will be held July 15-16 at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin.

Entry fee of $110 includes pre-round range balls and two days of greens fees.

The tournament has a stroke-play format, River Cup points are available, and prizes are gift cards for the Open and Senior (age 50 and older) divisions.

Women’s title on line

Female amateur golfers age 12 and older by July 14 are eligible to participate in the annual Central Illinois Women’s Championship golf tournament July 14-16 at Madison, Kellogg and Newman golf courses in Peoria.

Competitors will play 54 holes of stroke play. Golfers in a 9-hole division will play 27 holes.

Registration deadline is July 9. Entry forms are available at Peoria Park District golf courses and www.ppdgolf.org/tournaments.

Peoria Park District is looking for volunteers to work at the Illinois Elementary School Association state golf tournament Sept. 16 at Kellogg Golf Course. Volunteers are needed to serve as observers and scorers.

Tauchman gets call

The Colorado Rockies called up former Bradley star Mike Tauchman on Tuesday.

Tauchman, the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, was hitting .313 for Triple-A Albuquerque with 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 55 RBIs.

In his last 10 games for the Isotopes in the Pacific Coast League, the 26-year-old outfielder was hitting .367 with 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Tauchman was selected by the Rockies in the 10th round of the 2013 draft after an All-American season at Bradley. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Palatine native led the nation when he hit .425 in his senior season with the Braves.

The Rockies placed All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a strained shoulder. Also, outfielder David Dahl (ribcage) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

 

Coaches needed

Robert Morris University-Peoria is looking for a football coach for its National Club Football Association team that plays its home games at EastSide Centre in East Peoria.
