Holidays are for families.

So it was certainly appropriate that a father and son were winners Sunday in the Tri-County Match Play men's amateur golf tournament at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin.
Curt Minkel won the Championship Flight title with a 4 and 3 win over Mitch McCafferty. His son Mason Minkel won the A Flight championship with a 3 and 2 win over Josh Ellingson.

Phil Jordan isn't a member of the Minkel family, but he also won Sunday. He captured the tournament's Senior Flight title with a 3 and 2 victory over Eric Loftus.

The tournament semifinals and finals were played Sunday in each flight.
McCafferty didn't play in the semifinals because his opponent Tim Sheppard, the Championship Flight's No. 1 seed, dropped out of the tournament because of elbow problems.

Sheppard shot 3-under-par 69 in the tournament's qualifying round and blasted past Brandon Ferree 5 and 4 Saturday in the quarterfinals after getting a bye in the first round Friday, but he couldn't continue.

"Tim is having some major pain in his elbow. It's been going on for a while," said Steve Funk, the Pekin Park District's superintendent of golf.

"The elbow is bothering him so much that he's almost swinging one-handed," Funk said.

Thirty-three golfers competed in the tournament including 14 in Championship Flight, seven in A Flight and a dozen in Senior Flight (age 50 and older).

See Wednesday's paper (the Pekin Times won't be published Tuesday because of the July 4 holiday) for more on the tournament.

Vote early and often
Pekin native Nathan Taphorn and his Northwestern basketball teammates are still in contention for an ESPY Award.

Northwestern’s buzzer-beating victory over Michigan on March 1 advanced to the second round of the “Best Play” category. The play, in which Taphorn threw a length-of-the-court pass to Derek Pardon for a game-winning layup, prevailed in an online vote against a walk-off home run by Edwin Encarnacion.

There are eight plays remaining in the bracket-style format. Northwestern’s second-round opponent is a buzzer-beating 35-foot shot by the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook to eliminate the Nuggets from the NBA playoffs.

Second-round voting continues through Tuesday. Fans can vote online at espys.com. The 25th annual ESPYS show will be July 12 on ABC.
