Pekin girls tennis players Rachel Bresnahan and Amara Howell didn’t play a doubles match in a competition until the Mid-Illini Conference tournament Monday at Dunlap.
The lack of experience didn’t hurt them.
They finished fourth at No. 2 doubles despite facing seeded teams in each of their three matches.
Bresnahan and Howell played the No. 4 seed from Washington in the first round and won convincingly 6-2, 6-1.
Matched against the No. 1 seed from Metamora in the semifinals, the Pekin duo won the first set easily before Metamora won the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“The Metamora team had to make some key adjustments after the first set and they dug down deep to pull out a hard-fought win,” said Pekin coach Gary Garver.
Bresnahan and Howell had another good start in the third-place match, against the No. 3 seed from Morton, but Morton won 7-6 (4), 6-1.
“All in all, it was a very good showing for a team that had never played together in a competition,” Garver said.
