A Princeville man will serve jail and probation terms for forcing sexual contact on a teenage girl in Tazewell County last year.

Chad Freres, 40, pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor criminal sexual abuse charge that was reduced from a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison.

He’ll serve 14 days in jail over seven weekends and two years of sex offender probation. Freres also must pay $9,730 in restitution in the case and remain registered as a sex offender for 10 years.

Freres abused the girl, who was under age 17, when the two went hiking in the Mackinaw area in June 2016, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit.

He had met the girl two months earlier while on a mission trip to Haiti that she also took with her parents, the affidavit stated. He offered to train her at a gym he owns in Princeville and began sending her sexually-related photos by email.

After the girl told her parents what happened on the hike, her father contacted Freres’ wife, who said the allegations were true and that Freres was “very sorry it happened,” the affidavit stated.

The parents waited until January to report the incident to police. Freres was charged in the case in August.
