A Pekin man will be sentenced to federal prison for defrauding a neighbor out of about $100,000 through a scheme involving wire fraud.
Deryl Wright, 42, fraudulently received loans from his victim who lived two blocks from his home at 1401 Camden St. over about 1 1/2 years until last April, according to a federal indictment filed in September.
In custody since his arrest in October, he’ll be sentenced Feb. 28 in Peoria’s U.S. District Court. Wright pleaded guilty to three wire fraud counts on Nov. 22.
Wright met his victim in late 2015 while going door-to-door offering to shovel snow, the indictment stated. While the victim was not identified in the indictment, it stated he was “vulnerable” to the scheme Wright devised.
Wright told the man that his father had died and he would soon inherit a large amount of money. He received loans from the man and promised to pay him back with the inheritance funds, which never existed, the indictment stated.
He told the victim he needed the loans to pay taxes on the money coming to him as well as fees associated with the check before he could receive it. Wright explained delays in obtaining the check and the need for more loans with false claims of being arrested, car accidents and hospital admissions.
Three times last October, Wright persuaded his victim to send funds through wire transfers to him while he was in Colorado and Kansas, the indictment stated.
Wright is one of four Pekin residents who currently face sentencing or prosecution on federal charges in Peoria.
Wade Bonk, 39, was charged last month with conspiracy to distribute meth. James Nichols, 37, is scheduled to stand trial on Feb. 5 on a charge of unlawful transfer of a firearm and possession of one as a felon. A Feb. 26 trial is scheduled for Roxanne York, 30, on an escape charge for allegedly failing to return to a halfway house where she was completing a federal sentence for conspiracy to manufacture meth.
