Mid-Illini Conference wins have been few and far between this season for the Pekin girls basketball team.
That's why the Dragons were smiling following their 51-31 win Tuesday night over host East Peoria, their second victory in two games against the Raiders.
"I'm happy for our girls," said Pekin coach Becky Fulkerson. "We functioned better defensively, doing things we've been working on in practice, and stuck to our game plan offensively. We came ready to play, and a lot of positive things happened."
Maddy Cash led the Dragons (9-14, 2-8) with 19 points and she had a solid game defensively, Fulkerson said.
Taylor Goss scored 10 points for Pekin, Molly Flannigan contributed eight and Jenna Taphorn and Lauren Juergens each had six.
Sarah LaHood topped East Peoria (1-24, 0-11) with 10 points.
"The game was closer than the final score indicates," Fulkerson said. "East Peoria gave us a good battle."
Pekin beat East Peoria 64-21 on Dec. 12 at Hawkins Gym. The Raiders were short-handed that night.
Next on Pekin's schedule is Class 3A top-ranked and three-time defending state champion Morton. The Mid-Illini game will tip off at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins Gym.
Morton beat Pekin 72-36 on Dec. 16 when the teams met at the Potterdome.
