Plans for the annual Delavan Education Foundation Community Auction benefitting the students of Delavan District 703 are in full swing for Saturday, March 24.
All items offered for sale must be tagged between 6:30 and 10 a.m. Saturday, and selling will begin at 10 a.m. Sale items cannot be dropped off before 6 a.m. Consignment and Buyer Numbers will be at the American Legion Hall, the same location where biscuits and gravy will be served starting at 6 a.m. and lunch will be starting at 10 a.m.
The Delavan Unit for Home and Community Education will have coffee and cookies available for a donation at the Delavan Laundromat.
All items, including cars, trucks, machinery, furniture, appliances, tools, antiques, and livestock (no pens available) may be auctioned, but no firearms, televisions, tires, computers, monitors, batteries, or non-working appliances.
The auction is sponsored by the Delavan Education Foundation, Delavan Optimist Club and local volunteer organizations
Mayor Elizabeth Skinner said the auction not only helps the schools but also the town itself, bringing lots of visitors to the historic downtown streets.
“It is always such a great time when the community comes together to benefit our schools,” Skinner said. “We always look forward to it every year and love to welcome people to our town.”
A percentage of the final sale price is donated to the foundation for sponsoring the auction, and the seller receives the rest, based on commission rates figured on the seller’s total sales. Total sales of $10 or less will be a donation to DEF Community Auction, $10.01 to $100, 20 percent; $100.01 to $500, 15 percent; $500.01 to $3,000, 10 percent; and $3,000.01 and up, 7.5 percent. Titled vehicles and farm machinery over $3,000.01 will be charged a 5 percent commission fee. A $10 buy-back fee will be charged on any item bought back.
No property is to be removed until paid for, and all purchases must be removed the day of the sale. After 3:30 p.m., all items will be removed from the street. Cash, checks, PayPal, and debit or credit cards will be accepted.
Steve Yontz, Board member of the DEF, said that previous years have brought large crowds to gather in downtown Delavan to watch and bid on the always large assortment of items.
“I am hoping for good weather and a great turn out,” Yontz said. “Last year, the sale was well attended; people came from a wide surrounding area, both to buy and sell.”
Yontz said that proceeds from the auction helps the foundation in many projects for Delavan Unit District 703 students, including DEF scholarships, funding for students to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair, a field trip to see the Challenger exhibit, instruments for the Music Department, subscriptions to Scholastic News, math programs, Camp Read-A-Lot, funding for students to attend the anti-bullying movie “Wonder”, a donation to DHS Post Prom Party, and others.
