The Pekin volleyball team will play three matches Saturday morning before most folks will have breakfast.

The Dragons will face Peoria Notre Dame at 8 a.m., Deer Creek-Mackinaw at 9 a.m., and Chillicothe IVC at 10 a.m., in Hawkins Gym in Red Pool play in the Pekin Invitational tournament.

In the White Pool are Eureka, Olympia, Port Byron Riverdale and Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin.

The first- and second-place teams in each pool will move into the tournament semifinals at 1 p.m. in Hawkins Gym. Third-place and championship matches will follow at about 2 p.m.

Custer-Stoudt Gym will be used for pool play and matches between the third-place pool teams at 1 p.m. and fourth-place pool teams at about 2 p.m.

Defending tournament champion Pekin is 13-4-1. The Dragons won the Rockford Jefferson tournament and were runners-up in the Quincy tournament.

Pekin is 5-2 in the Mid-Illini Conference, trailing co-leaders Morton and Limestone (7-1) halfway through the conference season.

Emma Clark is Pekin’s leader in kills (122) and aces (22). Olivia Evans is tops in digs (181) and Anna McGovern (39) leads in blocks. Logan Finneran has 168 assists and Brooke Sherwood has 163.

BOYS SOCCER: Pekin and visiting Metamora played to a scoreless tie Tuesday in a Mid-Illini Conference boys soccer game at Coal Miners Park.

The Dragons shut out Olympia on Wednesday. But this wasn’t a defensive battle. Pekin won 9-0 on the road.

“We were a lot better (Wednesday),” Pekin coach Gus Kormah said about the second half of back-to-back games in a week when the Dragons (3-11-1) are playing four games.

Ethan Sandoval scored Pekin’s first four goals against Olympia. Shane Alcantara had three goals. Landon Antonini and Alex Tarter also scored. 

Koltin Waters had three assists. Alcantara had two assists. Sean Gregory, Alec Nauman and Sandoval each had an assist. Goalie Jon Haller needed to make only one save. 

The Dragons fired 17 shots at Olympia goalie Justyn Olson.
