HAVANA — A Canton man is dead and the search for another person continues after a car was driven into the Illinois River via a boat ramp Saturday night at the end of West Main Street in this Mason County town.

Aaron Anderson, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m. by Mason County Coroner Greg Cox. A search is ongoing in the river for one other occupant reported to be in the vehicle.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:05 p.m. when the Mason County emergency telephone system received a 911 phone call.

Responding to the scene were the Havana Police Department, the Mason County Sheriff’s office, Havana City Fire and Rescue, the Havana Rural Fire Department, the Mason County Dive Team and the Mason County EMS.

Anderson was located inside the vehicle at approximately 11:35 p.m.

Havana Chief of Police Jeremiah Hindahl said the investigation continues to determine the cause of the incident. Involved in the probe are the Havana Police Department, the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, the Mason County Coroner’s office and the Illinois State Police.

On Sunday, the dive team was called in upon the cover of darkness.

The incident appears similar to a 2013 accident in Chillicothe when a driver entered the Illinois River via a boat ramp at the end of Walnut Street and drowned. That tragedy resulted in the installation of reflective stop and warning signs leading toward the river.
