At 4:15 p.m. Oct. 31, the Morton Fire Department responded to a fire in the kitchen of a single-family residence located at 100 Woodcrest in Morton.
The fire started as a grease fire in a pan on the stove top and extended into the hood fan over the stove.
Jenifer M. Goertzen, 28, of Morton, was found murdered yesterday at a hotel in St. Louis.
At about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Morton Fire Department responded to 821 W. Jackson, J&J cleaners, for a report of a dryer fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered moderate smoke conditions throughout the rear interior of the building.
Firefighters found a commercial dryer with smoke coming out of the top of it along with some visible flame around where the dryer attached to its duct work.

Morton Police Department Chief Nick Graff said Dane T. Garner, 18, of 117 S. Nebraska, was arrested by deputies in Peoria County Oct. 19.

He is being held in Peoria County jail. In Morton, Garner is suspected in two burglaries on Waldheim and Robin streets.

It was a Washington Police Department officer who is less than a week away from retirement who nabbed the suspect at the corner of Lakeland Avenue and the Washington Blacktop. The officer recognized the vehicle, a gray Buick LaSabre with no rear license plate, from eye-witness reports. The officer then conducted a felony traffic stop, which reportedly occurred with no incident about 40 minutes after the alleged bank robbery. Deer Creek police assisted with the arrest following the confrontation.
