A Mt. Zion man was arrested in Morton for driving under the influence of alcohol even after his friends tried to stop him from driving.
According to a Morton Police Department report, police were dispatched to Steiner’s Corner on Morton Avenue after receiving a call of a fight in progress.
When police arrived, they met with two men who were involved in the incident. The men told police that the fight was over the keys to a vehicle, which their friend, David W. Petty, 31, of Mt. Zion, was driving. According to the report, the men suspected Petty was too intoxicated to drive. Petty began to drive off prior to the officers’ arrival.
An officer spotted the vehicle leaving Steiner’s Corner and initiated a traffic stop. After approaching Petty, the officer reported smelling an alcohol odor and noticed wet spots on his shorts.
Petty told police the wet spots may have been spilled beer or “possibly some urine.” Police also noticed Petty’s eyes were glossy, bloodshot and droopy. Petty was administered a field sobriety test and later arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol after police located an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
He was later booked and transferred to the Tazewell County Justice Center.
