Morton Police Chief Nick Graff said about 10 unlocked vehicles were burgled recently. And, he is disappointed.
It was not more than six months ago he alerted the Morton Times-News about vehicle burglaries. He said they could be avoided if residents lock their doors.
The problem seems to arise several times every year. Though the Morton Police Department continues to investigate these incidents as they are reported, Graff warns residents to lock the doors to their vehicles to avoid becoming a victim.
In a process referred to as "vehicle shopping," burglars check vehicles by lifting the door handles. If the door is locked, they move on. However, naive residents who neglect to secure their vehicles become likely targets because they are easily accessible. Often, victims will find any personal belongings of value missing from their cars.
