The Morton Police Department announced the results of a recent tobacco-compliance check.

On Thursday, the police department found the overall compliance rate for fiscal year 2010 to be 93 percent. The violation rate was just under 7 percent. Federal regulations require states to maintain an 80 percent compliance rate.

With the help of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here” tobacco enforcement program, Morton police have been educating tobacco retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of their customers.

The Morton Police Department was recently awarded a grant for fiscal year 2011 to continue the education and enforcement efforts. The compliance checks will begin in fall, marking the sixth year the department has participated in the program.
