Ruth Martha (Blume) Rice, 89, died Jan. 2, 2012, in Winston-Salem, N.C.  

Born April 28, 1922, in rural Hitchcock, S.D., to Herman and Martha (Hilkemeier) Blume, she married Edwin Rice Sept. 18, 1943, in Wilmington, Del.

Surviving are two sons, Charles E. (Cindy) Rice Sr. of Jacksonville and Mel (Baktu) Roshanravan of Coppell, Texas; two daughters, Mary (Steve) Trimmer of Gastonia, N.C., and Ruth (Keith) Cash of Winston-Salem, N.C.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Helen (John) Mitchell of Wills Point, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter-in-law, Susan (Zaborski) Rice.
She was a chemistry major, first attending Dakota Wesleyan University and transferring to Michigan College of Mining & Technology. She was awarded a degree by Dakota Wesleyan in 2002.

She was very active in Boy and Girl Scouts and in foreign youth exchange (Youth for Understanding).  She was also devoted to Life Blood and to the Red Cross as a 20-gallon blood donor and organizer of numerous blood drives.

She provided hours of volunteer service to residents of the Memphis Veteran’s Administration Hospital, St. Francis Nursing Home, Life Blood of Memphis and the Red Cross of Winston-Salem.

She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.

Funeral Services and interment were held in Davison, Mich.

Friends and family wishing to make a gift in Ruth’s memory are asked to consider local Salvation Army, local blood bank, Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., or Salemtowne retirement community in Winston-Salem, N.C.
