Wilford C. Thannert, 90, of Morton, died at 3:55 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at his home.
He was born May 26, 1920, in Mason City, Ill., to Wilford P. and Nell (Gleason) Thannert. He married Nellie I. Foster on March 29, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Delavan.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie Thannert of Morton; one son, Steven Thannert of New Port Richey, Fla.; two daughters, Sharon (Jack) Gillespie of Broomfield, Colo., and Julia (Dale) Moore of Morton; six grandchildren, Ellen (Randy) Drennen, Joseph Gillespie, Michael Thannert, Michelle (Robby) Martin, Derek Moore, Jeffrey Moore; and seven great-grandchildren, Connor, Ryan and Hollyn Drennen, Mack, Lacey, Reese and Tess Martin.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William.
Wilford was a World War II veteran, serving as a crew chief, flight chief and supervisor with the 591st Army Air Forces unit. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
Wilford worked for 38 years at Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1977 as a tool and die designer in East Peoria. After his retirement, he worked part time at Ludwig Mortuary and Grimm Chevrolet in Morton.
He was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton for 63 years.
Wilford was a great husband, father and role model. He enjoyed life and had a great sense of humor. He loved hunting, fishing, traveling and visiting family.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton, with Fr. Mark DeSutter officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Tremont, where military rites will be conducted.
Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton is handling arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Building Fund in Morton or to Morton Fire & Rescue.
