The strengths of the Morton High School math team may rely on the team-based events. But, it will take a combination of individual knowledge and collaborative teamwork to be successful, said math team coach Lucas Allen.
The MHS math team is in prime position to succeed in the state competion May 1 at the University of Illinois, Allen said.
Ranked No. 3 in the state, Allen expects the team will do well, but there is still room for improvement, he said.
“We’ve actually improved since regionals,” he said. “Our success at state will probably come down to our team events.”
Members of the junior-senior eight-person team practiced at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the high school.
MHS junior Joe Zeller said a lot of studying is required to be successful as a team.
“There’s a lot you have to study for,” Zeller said.
He, along with seven other members of the junior-senior eight-person team, places his focus on advanced algebra II and advanced pre-calculus. Those subjects will be the dominant focus of the questions during the state competition.
“There are 20 questions on this test,” Allen said. “I’ll be happy if they get 13 or 14 right.
“It’s usually pretty frantic.”
Zeller said the eight-person team has a lot of potential. Many of them have math classes together, he added.
