Several years ago, a new Morton pool seemed like a pipe dream. Particularly after the construction of Five Points in Washington, which has an indoor pool, the focus of many residents strayed from outdoor to indoor.
The former Morton pool was outdated, and a bit of an eyesore. But, to some Mortonites, a new outdoor pool took a backseat to the idea of an indoor recreational complex, including a pool.
But, an indoor complex was just as much a pipe dream as a new outdoor pool at the time. It seemed like these two debates were going to continue for the next 10 years.
Then came a concerted effort to raise awareness among residents about the condition of the former pool. Through Friends of the Morton Pool and other motivated individuals, the idea of constructing a new outdoor pool went from pipe dream to possibility (with some green and yellow pipes).
A $4 million bond referendum passed, and two years later, the new outdoor pool is now a reality.
Taxpayers footed the bill. Some are ecstatic; others gripe and groan.
There is no question, what is now visible in Idlewood Park is no waste of time or effort. Though some may still believe the money could have been better used on an indoor pool, it would be hard for them to argue that the new Morton Family Aquatic Center is a disappointment.
Following Saturday’s dedication ceremony, it is clear that many are impressed by the design and appeal of the pool. It almost does not fit the expectations of Mortonites — it is too representative of change.
The Morton Family Aquatic Center is an attraction. No, it will not serve as a reason for residents to move to Morton, but it is a nice addition to all the bells and whistles within the village. And, it serves to improve the recreational options for current residents.
Now, it deserves the support of naysayers. The pool is here to stay. It is a quality facility that reflects the price tag. It is time to move past the politics and appreciate the product.
