Where do you do most of your shopping?

It’s doubtful that many people stop to think about where they are spending their money, but they should.

Whether it’s going out to eat on a Friday night, grocery shopping on the weekend or buying gas during the week, residents should consider the fact that spending locally helps to financially support the town in which they live.

A portion of the sales tax from items sold goes to local municipalities. In other words, when buying locally, residents are investing back into their community.

This extends beyond gas stations and box stores. It includes all businesses in Morton, including those locally owned and operated, such as coffee shops, car repair shops, chiropractors and many more.

For more than a year, Morton business officials have promoted a variety of shop-local initiatives, including the 3/50 project, where residents are encouraged to spend $50 at three of their favorite stores. The Morton Economic Development Council has encouraged residents to keep their money in town, as well.

With the sales tax increase now in effect, residents are still going to find that their sales tax rates are much lower than in Peoria or East Peoria. On July 1, Morton’s retail sales tax rate increased from 6.75 percent to 7 percent. In Peoria and East Peoria the sales tax rate is 8 percent. Morton’s sales tax rate remains one of the lowest in the area, so that should not serve as a reason to go elsewhere.

So, the next time you get in the car and plan to go outside of town for entertainment or shopping, ask yourself if you can find what you are looking for locally.

It benefits many, including yourself.
