It is crunch time for District 709 officials, who will continue evaluating the state of the district’s educational facilities at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Morton Education and Administration Center.
Those involved in the process for the district’s longterm facility planning are aware that change needs to happen. However, officials are far from knowing what those changes will be.
However, residents (including those without children in school) should expect changes to happen — it would be a shame to ignore the needs of Morton’s educational facilities. Many of the district’s schools are outdated.
More importantly, despite an overall decline in student enrollment (See Page 6), space is certainly an issue in several schools. Those issues, more than anything, need to be addressed. School facilities are important not only to the district, but the village as well. Newer or improved facilities will be attractive to potential newcomers.
While the district’s enrollment numbers have remained relatively steady during the past decade, that may change as Morton grows.
Residents need to pay attention to the planning process and offer feedback. Ignoring the needs of Morton’s education system would be a major mistake.
