As Memorial Day approaches the Morton area begins to show a little patriotic flare. Flags and flowers — they are all small tokens of residents' appreciation for those who sacrificed for their country's freedom.
Each year, the Morton American Legion hosts a Memorial Day ceremony. This year's ceremony is at 11 a.m. Monday at the Legion's post, 24 E. Adams. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 10 a.m.
There is no reason anyone should ignore the local ceremony on a day off. But, if it is impossible to attend, try making it up to those who have served.
This year, Mortonites should consider going one step above what they did last year in remembrance of soldiers past and present.
Do not just attend the ceremony. Take veterans out to dinner, buy them lunch. More importantly, make sure to thank them for what they have done.
Now more than ever, veterans need the help of their communities. With dwindling memberships and interest in veteran’s affairs organizations, many are struggling to maintain the quality of service they are accustomed to providing.
Go beyond a ‘Thank You.’ Offer to lend a hand to organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
