Morton, Ill. -

If you think Morton is a safe community where you never have to lock your doors — think again.

Every summer, the same issue arises — residents become naive victims of vehicle thefts and unwanted entries. Still, residents seem surprised that this happens in Morton.

Residents in this community are wealthier than much of Central Illinois. That makes Morton a prime target for such burglaries.

Face it, some possessions are valuable, and criminals know this, making unwary residents vulnerable targets. Locking doors should be second nature.

Police chief Nick Graff said he is not looking to alarm people, he just wants people to understand that, though it might be safe to walk the sidewalks at 3 a.m. and not get assaulted, it is not safe to leave possessions unsecured.

It does not take a repeat offender to be enticed by Mortonites’ valuables. Similar crimes can be carried out by three juveniles walking down a sidewalk who dare each other to take something from an unattended vehicle.

Leaving purses and wallets in vehicles is not just naive, it is shortsighted. In an age of identity theft, it is surprising to see that people continue to do so.

Taking precautions to protect belongings may be a hassle, but it is a necessary step. It would be a bigger hassle to try to replace belongings.

The best way to ensure possessions are left unharmed is by keeping them in one’s locked home or car.

Do not be naive, vulnerable Morton. Lock your doors and keep your possessions safe.
