Utilities pose a problem

In a November 19 editorial, written by Nathan Domenighini, Morton Coin Wash is taken to task by Mr. Domenighini for what the writer considered to be overly high prices.
Yes, it’s true that we have raised our prices. However, we are only reacting to Morton Utilities rising natural gas rates.
In the interest of full disclosure, we tried to negotiate a more favorable rate with Morton Utilities and even offered to purchase our natural gas from a different supplier. Both options were rejected by the city.
The largest expense for any self-service laundry owner is utilities. On average, utility costs comprise between 20 percent and 25 percent of a laundry’s gross revenue. Add that to salaries, financing, new equipment, maintenance and other fees associated with operating a small business, and you are looking at expenses that would discourage many people from offering this type of service.
Morton Coin Wash provides a clean, bright and comfortable laundry facility that has been a strong community partner long before we purchased the business – and we certainly wish to continue that relationship.
So, while Mr. Domenighini can no doubt find lower prices at other laundries not bound to acquiring their natural gas from Morton Utilities, perhaps he should ask himself if these cheaper laundries have also sponsored the VFW in town, the Morton Chamber of Commerce or a local softball team.
Clearly, we encourage all of our neighbors to support local businesses that, in turn, support this community. We are proud to offer Morton’s residents a quality laundry facility with newer, environmentally friendly equipment, as well as employment for five attendants. But, most importantly, we’re honored to be a part of the vibrant Morton community.
