BLOOMINGTON — After shooting a 78 Friday with five three-putts, Brimfield senior Brady Kreiter knew what he had to do Saturday.
"I came out (early) and worked on my (putting) speed today," he said. "And I didn’t have a three-putt all day. I felt very comfortable out there."
Kreiter fired a 74, aided by three birdies, to finish tied for third with a 152 two-day total in the Class 1A boys golf state finals at Prairie Vista Golf Course.
"He just putted lights out," said Kreiter’s coach and father Kevin Kreiter. "He played a real good round of golf. He’s come so far. I’m so proud of him."
The only area team to qualify in Class 1A was Putnam County, which finished a disappointing 10th with a 683 total.
"We were fifth after Day 1 and had a chance to play better on Day 2," said Panthers coach Josh Nauman. "But it didn’t pan out. We got off to a slow start.
"The goal was no big numbers, but there were a lot of big numbers out there."
Caleb Dzierzynski topped Putnam County with a 159 total after carding a 76 Saturday. He birdied three of the last eight holes and finished tied for 19th. Teammate Ian Roach was tied for 35th with a 166 total.
El Paso-Gridley’s Nathan Lavender shot a 79 and finished with a 159, good for a 15th-place tie with Peoria Christian’s Isaak Ramsey, who had an identical score.
"It was a rough day for me," said Ramsey, who tied for seventh last year. "I didn’t make any putts pretty much all day. But it’s cool to get to state."
Brimfield’s Jeremy Ott tied for 27th with a 164, Henry’s Matt Boucher tied for 39th with a 167, Havana’s Nick Weaver tied for 42nd with a 168, Hartem/Delavan’s Joey Matthews tied for 47th with a 169 and South Fulton’s Cole Hopping tied for 58th with a 172.
Port Byron Riverdale claimed the 1A team title with a 638 total. Riverdale's Tyler Bussert won the individual state title.
