Another super-duals competition, and another 1-3 record for the Pekin wrestling team.
The Dragons beat Mascoutah 60-20, but lost to three other teams Saturday at Mattoon. They had the same record the previous weekend at Plainfield South.
Collinsville (51-26), Belleville East (47-27) and Mahomet-Seymour (60-15) beat Pekin at Mattoon.
“There were good teams at Plainfield South and Mattoon,” said Pekin coach John Jacobs. “”It’s tough watching our young guys get beat up, but they’re finding out what the competition is like out there.”
Brody Haynes, one of Pekin’s veterans, didn’t compete Saturday because he was sick.
“He woke up Friday with a 104-degree temperature,” Jacobs said.
Pekin’s Ryan Haynes (113) and Drake Hawkins (120) each went 4-0 at Mattoon. Noah Lamb (285) was 3-1. Tyler Siddles (195) was 2-1 before sitting out the Mahomet-Seymour match to rest his surgically repaired knee.
Jacobs said he was proud that none of his wrestlers were pinned in the win over Mascoutah. All four Pekin losses in the dual came by technical fall.
“Our guys were fighting in that match when they were getting beat, even on their back,” he said. “They showed a lot of grit.”
