Ever since winning a state title as a freshman, Morton’s Tommy Kuhl had been marked among the elite prep golfers in Illinois.

Kuhl answered any questions about who was No. 1 this year, with a monumental exclamation point during the Class 2A state finals. His state-record 8-under-par 63 on Friday and 66 on Saturday at Weibring Golf Club were the two best single-day rounds in state history, making his 129 total the best in any class by eight strokes. The ridiculous 13-under score, highlighted by 13 birdies and one eagle, was 12 strokes ahead of second place.

Oh, and then there was that 59 he shot during a practice round in August to tie a course record at Pine Lakes. Kuhl eagled the par-5 fourth hole to go with 10 birdies and seven pars in that practice round.

The three-time Journal Star Boys Golfer of the Year will take his talents to the University of Illinois, the three-time Big Ten Conference champions.
