After finishing seventh in The Clash national dual-team tournament in Minnesota the last weekend in 2017, Washington opened 2018 with an impressive two-day weekend.

The Panthers powered to a 69-12 victory against Tolono Unity on Friday at Huff Hall in Champaign, before the University of Illinois match against Nebraska.

The next day, the state’s top-ranked Class 2A team captured the title of the Sycamore Invitational by putting nine in the top four, six in title bouts and earning three individual championships.

Winning titles at Sycamore were Tyler Delaware at 132, Blaize Punke at 145 and Dalton Jensen at 152.

Delaware (24-3) was named one of Illinois Best Weekly’s Stars of the Week after going 4-0. The 2016 state champ and 2017 runner-up had two pins and impressive decisions over 3A wrestlers Dontrell Johnson of Rockford East in the semifinals (14-3 major) and Robert Major of Downers Grove South in the finals (6-1).

Punke and Jensen also each had two pins and two decisions to go 4-0 at Sycamore.
