It wasn’t a good Monday for the Pekin baseball and softball teams.

Each lost a Mid-Illini Conference game at home, and was victimized by a big inning.

Limestone beat Pekin 6-3 in baseball, ruining the Dragons’ Senior Day at Harry Anderson Field.

Ahead 3-1 going into the top of the seventh inning, the Rockets (16-6, 9-4) scored three runs to give themselves some insurance. Pekin (11-11, 5-8) made things interesting with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Pekin led East Peoria 6-5 in softball going into the top of the sixth. The Raiders scored nine runs in the sixth and won the game 14-6.

Bryson Swift bounced back from some tough starts to pitch 6 1/3 strong innings for the Pekin baseball team against Limestone. Swift got the first out in the seventh, then Limestone’s offense got going against him and reliever Jon Kuethe.

Five of the Rockets’ nine hits in the game came in the seventh.

Pekin scored in the first on an RBI single by Nathan Righi. The Dragons’ runs in the seventh came courtesy of an RBI fielder’s choice by Michael Ellwanger and an RBI single by Kuethe.

Seniors Skyler Coryell, Braden Lavin, Ellwanger, Cade Edmiston and Swift were honored.

Pekin softball coach Skip Penning said the loss to East Peoria was a microcosm of when the Dragons have struggled this season.

“You have to play seven good innings, and we played well in five innings,” he said, referring to East Peoria’s four runs in the first and nine runs in the sixth.

“Plus, we’ve been in 90 percent of our games in the fifth and sixth innings,” Penning said.

Sam Despines and Sarah LaHood each homered for East Peoria (13-13, 6-6). Despines knocked in five runs and LaHood batted in three runs.

LaHood’s HR capped East Peoria’s big sixth inning, which was kept alive early by back-to-back Pekin errors.

Madalyne Aaron also had three RBIs for the Raiders.

Pekin’s Noelle Bowling, back in action after missing two weeks because of a concussion, drove in two runs. Hallie Stoller, Olivia Percefull and Riley Carrroll each had two hits for Pekin (7-11, 4-8).

Pekin’s Erin Flairty, also sidelined by a concussion, hopefully will be back next week for regionals.

The Pekin baseball team will play at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at Limestone. The softball team hosted Mid-Illini opponent Metamora on Tuesday on Senior Day. Ten seniors were honored.
