The Metamora boys cross country team put three runners in the top 10 and captured the Normal University High Class 2A regional title Saturday at Maxwell Park.
Jacob Gray and Adam Gilbreath-Glaub led the Redbirds, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Bloomington placed second, with area teams Washington (third) and Morton (fifth) also advancing to sectionals.
Matthias Powell of Mahomet-Seymour was the individual champion in 15 minutes, 14 seconds. Morton's Sam Lange came in third (15:56), while Washington was led by Chris Hurd's eight-place finish.
AT GALESBURG: Notre Dame senior Chris Gilbert ran to the individual title to lead the Irish to a sectional-qualifying second-place finish behind champion Geneseo at Lake Storey. Gilbert finished in 16:53.4, ahead of Limestone freshman Wilson Georges (17:00).
Also moving on to sectionals as a team were Galesburg (third), East Peoria (fourth), Dunlap (fifth) and Limestone (sixth).
AT MACOMB: High winds didn't stop the Elmwood/Brimfield boys from winning their seventh consecutive regional title and 14th in the last 17 years. After Miles Sheppard of Hamilton won the individual title (15:41.3), the Trojans claimed the next four spots and finished with just 24 points — 68 better than runner-up Macomb. Griff Inskeep (16:26.7), Luke Hoffmann, Jacob Brown and Thomas Harmon crossed second through fifth, respectively, for Elmwood.
Other area sectional qualifying teams were Knoxville (third), Havana (fourth), Princeville (sixth) and Lewistown (seventh). Havana's trio of Adam Bohm, Jaden Schultz and David Snider placed sixth through eight,h respectively.
AT FARMINGTON: Olympia won the team title and Leland Sumer of Tremont the individual championship in this 13-team field.
Olympia, led by Jon Neville (sixth) and Logan Wheeler (eighth), finished with 57 points to grab team honors ahead of Eureka (73) and El Paso-Gridley (83).
Sumer covered the windy 3-mile course in 15:27 — five seconds ahead of Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Colby Johnson. El Paso-Gridley's Noah Smith was third (15:35), just ahead of the Eureka duo of Jack Cook (15:35) and Kyle Johnson (15:41).
Other area teams moving on were Dee-Mack (fourth), Tremont (sixth) and Illinois Valley Central (seventh). Farmington's Andrew Cation was an individual sectional qualifier.
AT ST. BEDE: Sophomore Victor Echeveste's sixth-place individual finish led Fieldcrest to a sectional-qualifying third-place team finish. Hall, Princeton and the hosts also moved on as teams. Individual advancers were Michael Dzierzynski of Putnam County and OZ McClellan of Henry/Midland.
Pekin senior Brody Blackwell qualified for sectionals with an eighth-place finish (16:05), but the Dragons came three points away from sixth-place Bradley Bourbonnais and did not advance as a team from the 3A Normal Community Regional ... Galva advanced with a seventh-place team finish in the 14-team 1A Rock Falls Regional... LaSalle-Peru finished second, behind champion New Lenox Providence, at the 2A Morris Regional to move on to sectionals. The Cavaliers put Logan Schaefer (sxith), Ryan Hartman (eight) and Logan Johnson (ninth) in the top 10.
