Morton Junior High to send six contestants to state tournament

Set for state: Based on their performances Saturday at the Sectional G tournament, six individuals from the Morton Junior High wrestling team advanced to the Illinois Elementary School Association state final this weekend in DeKalb. The Morton Junior High School wrestling team will have a significant presence at this weekend’s Illinois Elementary School Association state final.

Six Junior Potter grapplers finished in the top three of the Sectional G tournament to earn a berth this weekend in the capstone event of the postseason.

State is Friday and Saturday at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center in DeKalb.

Kyle King and Reid Butler were MJHS runners-up in the sectional staged at Olympia.

Ryan Brooks, Brandon Bland, Brock Kelley and Clay Cone all were third for the Junior Potters.

King was second in 85 pounds after a pin and 5-2 decision advanced him to the championship bout.

In 105, Butler won with a pin and 8-3 decision in the semifinals.

Brooks (65), Bland (75), Kelley (90) and Cone (135) all produced clutch victories in the third-place contests to secure their bids.

Dakota Hefner, Austin Weyland and Jordan Case, in 155, 167 and 215, respectively, all were fourth for Morton.

The Junior Potters landed fifth place as a team at the sectional with 115 points.
