Potters earn East Moline crown

The Morton volleyball team waxed Pekin Oct. 6, 25-6, 25-17.

The positive Mid-Illini Conference decision gave the Potters a sweep of the season series with the Dragons.

Sarah Livingston or Shannon McGlaughlin led Morton in four categories.

Livingston topped the squad with six kills and equalled McGlaughlin’s two blocks.

McGlaughlin’s nine assists and five aces led the Potters.

Elizabeth Kennell made 10 digs for the visitors.

The Morton freshmen (25-21, 25-13) and Pekin sophomores (25-18, 25-21) produced underclass victories.

MHS 25-25, East Peoria 7-14
The Potters rolled to another victory Oct. 7 over the Raiders.

Morton improved to 7-3 in the conference and sent the guests to their ninth M-I setback in a row.

McGlaughlin perplexed East Peoria for 15 kills and four aces.

Kennell snagged eight digs and McKenna Krebs passed for seven assists.

Livingston and Heidi Schoenbein delivered blocks for the Potters.

Morton’s freshmen won in three sets, 25-19, 17-25, 15-7, but its sophomores were defeated, 18-25, 18-25.

East Moline Invitational
The Potters won the championship Saturday without suffering any defeats.

In its second match of the day against Richwoods, Morton (17-11-1) prevailed, 28-26, 25-15, to collect the title hardware.

“The championship match vs. Richwoods was a great match to watch and be a part of,” MHS head coach Darrin Johnson said. “It was a playoff atmosphere with a loud, intense crowd.”

McGlaughlin led the Potters with 16 kills and a couple aces.

Kathryn Hess distributed 19 assists and Livingston collected nine digs.

Kelsey Kirk, Shelbi Ummel and Schoenbein blocked the Knights.

Morton opened with a 25-21, 27-25 win over Rock Island Alleman.

McGlaughlin’s 10 kills and three blocks paced the winners, while Livingston added a handful of aces.

Kennell recorded 14 digs and Hess 11 assists.

The Potters edged Sciota West Prairie, 25-23, 25-21, with Livingston supplying 10 kills.

McGlaughlin had four blocks and shared the team lead with Livingston with two aces.

Kennell made 13 digs and Krebs handed out 12 assists.

Morton tied Richwoods, 18-25, 25-10, in its third match of the day.

McGlaughlin paced the Potters with nine assists, seven kills and five aces.

Also topping the squad were Kennell with nine digs and Ummel with three blocks.

In the semifinals, Morton dismissed the host Lady Panthers, 25-15, 25-22, behind 14 kills from McGlaughlin.

McGlaughlin contributed six digs and five aces as well.

Hess dished out 13 assists and Schoenbein skied for two blocks.

Postseason: Morton is a No. 2 seed in the Class 3A Bloomington Regional.

The Potters will face third-seeded Limestone at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 in the semifinals.

The other semifinal pits No. 1 seed Bloomington against fourth-seeded East Peoria.

The regional final is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 31.
