On the run: Austin Bradford, a Morton junior, is expected to be one of the boys cross country team’s top runners this season. Leading the way for the Potters is senior Joe Zeller, who was an all-state selection in 2009 after a top-10 finish at the Class 2A state final.

The Morton boys and girls cross country teams are looking forward to promising seasons after a dedicated effort in the summer.

“The team is looking real good,” MHS head coach Joel Zehr said. “A lot of guys and girls did a lot of training in the offseason. They’re ready to go.”

Several boys racked up more than 500 summer miles, while multiple girls surpassed the 300-mile mark.

The Potters were pleased with how time trials went at Northwood Park in the second week of practice and were eager to face guests Richwoods and Olympia Tuesday.

The next action is Saturday in Galesburg, the first invitational of the season.

Morton has the Oct. 15 Mid-Illini Conference meet at Detweiller Park circled on its calendar.

Both squads were heavily depleted by sickness last season, causing lower-than-expected league finishes.

The boys are one of the Mid-Illini teams to beat.

They also are highly regarded by Dyestat Illinois.

Morton is No. 9 in the organization’s Class 2A preseason poll despite the loss of some key runners to graduation.

The Potters will attempt to end Metamora’s streak of eight consecutive M-I championships.

“We’re definitely a contender for the conference title — that’s a goal for the varsity boys,” said Zehr. “They’re looking to come back in a strong way.”

Senior Joe Zeller will fill the No. 1 position after achieving first-team all-conference and all-state honors a year ago.

Senior Nick Piper is a solid No. 2 runner and co-captain along with Zeller. Right behind him is junior Austin Bradford, who is looking for a big season after the summer mileage he amassed.

Junior Nick Steffen and sophomore Luke Riffle, who came over from the soccer team, are lined up in the fourth and fifth positions.

Juniors Grant Klobuchar and Jake Lyons also are seeking top-seven slots after the results of the time trials.

“I think they will round out the team nicely,” Zehr said. “I hope they can put together a nice tight pack.”

The coach wants to see the Nos. 4 through 7 runners close the gap between them and the top three Potters.

The rest of the boys team includes: Isaac Ackerman, Bruce Ackley, Joseph Doan, Ryan Fitzgerald, Adam Geier, Jordan Goodyear, Tyler Hohulin, Andy Homa, Walter Jankowski, Matt Kimmey, Tanner King, Joe Loftus, Tim Luchtefeld, Matt Lyons, Jeremy Mohr, Jansen Myers, Joel Park, Austin Stephens and Quentin Young.

Dale Domnick was one of three seniors in Morton’s top seven for the ’09 regional runner-up. He also was a second-team all-conference recipient.

After a sixth-place sectional showing a year ago, the Potters are shooting for the 2A state meet this fall.

Girls cross country
The Morton girls’ depth is significantly improved after gaining 13 new participants this season.

Zehr has an objective of a top-10 sectional standing for the Potters.

“It’s doable this year with this group of girls,” he said. “The girls team is really looking deep.”

Junior Ashley Pribble is Morton’s leader. She is hoping to register times in the mid-to-low 18s in ’10. Pribble is rated 23rd individually in 2A by Dyestat Illinois.

Right behind her is sister Caitlin, who is returning to form. Zehr said watching the Pribbles race each other is exciting.

Hannah Behle, a sophomore, is one of the girls who logged more than 300 miles and she has taken on a leadership role.

Juniors Macaela Bennett and Nicole Lockwood are ready to claim varsity spots after being active all summer.

Senior captains Grace Jankowski and Ashley Coon have provided great leadership, Zehr said. They will have seven letters between them by the end of the season.

A couple of other intriguing runners are juniors Carly Crocker and Autumn Andrews, a transfer from East Peoria.

Crocker, a varsity contributor in other sports in ’09-10, had a strong effort in time trials. Andrews just got clearance to compete. She was a first-team all-M-I performer in the sport as a freshman with the Raiders.

The rest of the team is made up of: Savanah Crull, Tatum Dowell, Nikki Eigsti, Brooke Goodyear, Megan Harkness, Hayley Hoffmire, Caitlyn Lewellyn, Jessie Linder, Nilah MacLean, Emily Ogden, Kate Owens, Erika Payne, Katharina Rains, Katie Saunders, Lauren Wirth and Jenna Zbinden.

East Peoria, the No. 4 rated team according to Dyestat Illinois, has won five straight Mid-Illini crowns. Metamora, last year’s league runner-up, is No. 9.

While the Potters likely are competing for third place in the conference, they are not conceding anything.

“The girls are capable of running with any team,” Zehr said.
