The Morton volleyball team whipped Canton Oct. 13.

In a 25-13, 25-9 Mid-Illini Conference road win, the Potters received six kills apiece from Sarah Livingston, Heidi Schoenbein and Peyton McAtee.

Kathryn Hess paced Morton with eight assists and six digs to help the girls complete a sweep of the Lady Giants.

Livingston and Schoenbein were co-leaders with two blocks, while McAtee served three aces.

The Potter sophomores and freshmen also won at Canton.

The host Potters beat the Rockets for the second time this season Oct. 15.

After honoring seniors Elizabeth Kennell, Maggie McMurtrey, McAtee and McGlaughlin, Morton (19-11-1, 9-3) extended its non-losing streak to nine matches.

“I thought we mixed up our sets pretty well and had some great attacks,” MHS head coach Darrin Johnson said.

McGlaughlin topped the team with 10 kills and four aces.

Kennell lunged for seven digs, Schoenbein had three blocks and Hess 11 assists.

The Potters led 7-2 in the first set on a pair of McGlaughlin kills and back-to-back Hess aces before Limestone rallied for a 9-9 tie.

It was 17-15 in favor of the hosts before Schoenbein hammered an attack from the middle.

McGlaughlin then drilled a couple aces and McAtee tacked on points with consecutive slams.

A Schoenbein block gave Morton the opening set.

The Rockets rose from a 6-6 draw to an 18-12 advantage in the second set.

The Potters put to good use a practice segment in which they try to battle back from that exact margin.

A McGlaughlin kill sent her to the service line with a five-point shortfall for Morton.

After a Limestone miscue, McGlaughlin delivered two aces, Schoenbein a kill and Kelsey Kirk a block to make it 20-18 Potters.

“We just had to find the motivation to push through at the end,” McGlaughlin said of the set-two rally.

A McAtee ace, followed by Schoenbein knocking one straight to the floor, upped the edge to 23-19.

The Rockets missed long on an attack to end the match.

Morton remained in a second-place tie with Dunlap entering the final week of conference play.

Limestone was without two key players, including its setter.

The Potters lost to the Limestone sophomores in three sets, 23-25, 25-19, 11-15. The freshmen also came up short, 16-25, 20-25.
