Morton’s girls tennis state final experience was shortened last week.

The Potter doubles tandems of Jessica Martin/Gaya Nersesyan and Julie Martin/Mariah Thompson got in only one match apiece after weather delayed the start of the Illinois High School Association tournament in the Chicago suburbs.

The IHSA website said, “Due to Thursday’s weather, matches were not completed, therefore the back draw has been cancelled.”

Senior Jessica Martin and Nersesyan, a junior, dropped a three-set decision to Maggie and Kelly Ruane of New Lenox Providence Catholic, 5-7, 6-3, 2-6.

Freshman Julie Martin and Thompson, a junior, also fell to a Providence Catholic duo, 1-6, 2-6.

Jessica Martin made her second state appearance, while the others played there for the first time.

Prior to the state final, Pete Martin-coached Morton won the Mid-Illini Conference championship and placed second, by a point, in the Bloomington Sectional.
