PEORIA — Explore the world of dinosaurs this weekend at "Jurassic Quest: Where the Big Dinosaurs Live," an interactive exhibit featuring more than 80 museum-quality, life-size dinosaurs, some of them animatronic.
The event bills itself as America's largest and most realistic dinosaur event. The exhibit is open Friday through Sunday in the Exhibit Halls at the Peoria Civic Center, 201 SW Jefferson Ave.
In collaboration with paleontologists, each dinosaur was replicated in detail from scaly skin to feathers or fur. The dinosaurs roar and move, some even walk around.
Dinosaur experts will share their knowledge during interactive tours of the exhibit. Visit the fossil area in the Dinosaur Museum and see real dinosaur fossils dating back over 60 million years.
The baby dinosaurs include a triceratops and Camarasaurus. The life-like puppets interact with guests in half-hour segments throughout the day.
"Jurassic Quest" also has adolescent dinos that walk around and play with guests. Be prepared, they have been known to grab baseball caps right off of unsuspecting heads, nibble at shirts and pose for pictures. This event is also in 30-minute segments throughout the day.
Besides the exhibit itself, a variety of activities are available.
Those attending can dig up fossils like a paleontologist or ride on the back of a 24-foot Tyrannosaurus rex or the spiky Carnotaurus. There are five different species to ride.
Other activities include inflatable mazes and large slides, a multi-track Dino Bungee Pull, Dinosaur Petting Zoo, face painting (extra fee) and craft tables. Dino scooters are available for children that are 3 years old and younger.
Test your dinosaur knowledge at the Dino Science Station, then make a plaster fossil to take home. Answers to the quiz are found on the information signs in the exhibit. Food vendors and a gift shop are also available.
Some attractions and activities require a VIP pass or a fee.
Regular admission ($20 plus a service fee) includes access to the dinosaur exhibit, science station, crafts and coloring station, excavation station, movies in the dino theater, and access to the interactive baby dinosaur show and the walking dinosaur show. The VIP ticket ($34 plus a service fee) adds unlimited playtime in the inflatables, stationary and walking dinosaur rides, fossil digs, bungee pull, dino scooters and more. Individual rides or featured attractions can be purchased for $5 each. Face Painting and Green Screen Photography are additional fees.
