Two Pekin teams that have struggled to get into the victory column this fall enjoyed some much-needed success Tuesday against Mid-Illini Conference foes.
The girls tennis team beat visiting Limestone 5-1 at John Moss Courts in a match that ended early because of rain and the boys soccer team battled visiting Metamora to a scoreless tie at Coal Miners Park.
“It was good to see our girls’ hard work pay off,” said Pekin girls tennis coach Angel Carrington.
Only the six singles matches were completed Tuesday, and Pekin won five of them.
Zariah Wherry (No. 2), Kayla Chau (No. 3), Brogan Gresham (No. 4), Gabby Gonzalez (No. 5) and Keri Walker (No. 6) were the winners, all in straight sets. They lost just five games between them.
Ashley Stilling of the Dragons lost at No. 1 singles.
Pekin boys soccer coach Gus Kormah praised his players for their effort against Metamora.
“I’ll put my starting 11 against any team in the area,” Kormah said. “I’m proud of these boys.”
Pekin goalie Jon Haller made seven saves Tuesday in recording the shutout. Metamora goalie Logan Fitz had five saves. Metamora had seven corner kicks and Pekin had two.
VOLLEYBALL: Limestone beat Pekin 25-21, 25-23 Tuesday in Hawkins Gym in a showdown between two of the Mid-Illini Conference’s top volleyball teams.
Emma Clark had eight kills and Brooke Sherwood dished out eight assists for the Dragons. Pekin’s Jenna Taphorn was credited with 1.5 blocks.
