PEORIA — The city's public radio broadcaster will be managed by its counterpart in Bloomington-Normal.
WCBU-FM (89.9) is to be operated by WGLT-FM by June 1, according to a news release Bradley University released Tuesday. WCBU is based on the Bradley campus.
Representatives of Bradley and Illinois State universities signed an agreement that took effect Wednesday, the release stated. ISU owns WGLT (89.1).
Current programming on WCBU, including local news coverage, is to continue, the release stated, but personnel operations are to be handled by WGLT.
That is expected to lead to a reduction in staff at WCBU, according to Zach Gorman, the chief information officer at Bradley.
Employment contracts for Bradley employees expire May 31. Current WCBU staffers are to be able to apply for jobs under the new management.
"Operational roles will be combined with staff in Bloomington-Normal, but there will be staff committed solely to WCBU, and they will be housed on Bradley's campus," WGLT General Manager R.C. McBride stated.
Space for WCBU is being constructed in Morgan Hall on the Bradley campus. The station's current home is in Jobst Hall, which is to be demolished for the university's new convergence center.
Last year, Bradley President Gary Roberts said WCBU would not be relocating to another campus site. He cited expense.
The management change has been in discussion for months.
As part of the agreement, a WGLT translator signal in Peoria, at 103.5 FM, is to begin simulcasting the classical-music format heard on WCBU-HD2. Currently the Peoria translator simulcasts the main WGLT signal.
"We heard the listeners when they said how much they missed classical music, so we worked together to bring it back to this market," Gorman stated about what once was a staple on WCBU.
WGLT is to handle fundraising for WCBU, beginning in June. Both stations are non-commercial.
Since its founding 49 years ago, WCBU has been based at Bradley. WGLT went on the air in 1966.
